Imperfect Reflections

Imperfect Reflections - A? Hidahl - 2016 - ?
Imperfect Reflections

The circles and ovals in this piece are both chaotic and ordered.

They are randomly spaced, but reflected exactly, across the center.

That's how I see people, individually.

Everybody has their own unique composition; both Psychologically and Physiologically.

You are a reflection of the chaos within you.

Punk Fuckin' Rock!!!

Punk Fuckin' Rock - A. Hidahl Art - 2016 - ?
PUNK FUCKIN' ROCK
Isn't just music...
Isn't just a catch phrase...
Isn't just a fashion...
Isn't just an angry looking guy at the bus stop...

PUNK FUCKIN' ROCK
is a philosophy...
a statement about society...
a celebration of ugliness...
a rejection of Fascism...
a desire to destroy the Oligarchy...
an understanding that the majority of society are sheep, and manipulated to remain such...
an embrace of apathy bordering on nihilism...
a rejection of religious extremism and theocracy...
understands that the phrase, "FUCK YOU" is a perfectly acceptable greeting or parting...

PUNK FUCKIN' ROCK
understands that it's probably smarter than "you"...
believes in STANDING UP for something...

PUNK FUCKIN' ROCK
has been fighting for YOU, whether you realize it or not...
has shaped society very quietly...
knew there were problems before anybody else did...

PUNK FUCKIN' ROCK
knows that the hippies were wrong...
we can't all "get along"...
there are too many assholes in the world for us all to just "get along"...
some people DESERVE a good cockpunch to their ego...
some people NEED to be put in their place...
taking the "high road" all the time only makes you look like a pussy...

BE OFFENSIVE!
because the people who get offended DESERVE it...
because SOMEBODY has to show the bastards that they can't shove everybody around...
because it's fucking funny as hell to see the prudes get all uppity about "four letter words"...
and because we are a reflection of the ugliness in society!
... besides, when you look like you could potentially headbutt anybody for any reason (or no reason at all), you find out exactly what the assholes are made of!

WE are the counterbalance to the lemmings!

WE are the rebels of modern society!

WE know that you're TOO FUCKING WEAK to fight the wars we need!

WE are the ones who will quietly usher in the anger of the next generation!

YOU'RE WELCOME!

FUCK YOU!

The Eye of Anger

Angry Eye, A. Hidahl, 2015

Anger
Takes over my thoughts
Takes over my feelings
Takes over my whole self

Shaking hands,
Sweating,
Twitching brow,
The penetrating power of words and circumstances.

Stupidity, racism, and pious zealotry
light the fuse quickly
and it's a short fuse
FUCKER!!! I can't reach you through the internet!

... but I can use MY words...
 I can use MY anger...
... MY hate...
... MY power!

If I can fuck up your day
or at least your minute,
it SERVES YOU RIGHT
for being an asshole!

When I'm mad,
You're not even human...
You're a shit stain
on society's carpet!

You're PATHETIC!
You're WORTHLESS!
You're about as smart as HALF the mayo in a tuna salad sandwich!
You have a micropenis that makes other micropenises look MASSIVE in comparison!

I get FED UP!
I can only take so much WILLFUL IGNORANCE
before I explode!
Disgusting, unevolved, inbred fucking troll...

"Why don't you tell us how you REALLY feel?"
Oh... was I too harsh?
Did I go too far?
Do I look like an asshole?

I DON'T CARE!
Willful ignorance and rejection of reality are the HEIGHT OF STUPIDITY!
They SHOULD be offended!
They're probably too stupid to know WHY they're offended, though...

FUCK 'EM!

The Details Are in the Devil

The Details Are in the Devil - A Hidahl - 2015

The bastards are everywhere...
There are always people who want to tear you down...
To destroy you...
To exploit you...
To use you...

The hard part is figuring out
who are the devils
and who are the rest.

They say,
"The devil's in the details"

...but that's not exactly true...

... in fact, it's just the opposite...

The details are in the devil.

Some will use you for love...
Some for money...
Some for labor...
Some for comfort...

It all depends on the personal advantage that they're looking for.
... what they need...
... what they want...
... their addictions...
... their compulsions...
... their insecurities...
... their conscience (or lack thereof)...
... their logical (or illogical) conclusions...
... their lusts...
... their bitterness at the world...

Some will use you because they need to, for want of basic devices...
Some will use you because they don't think you'll notice...
Some will use you because they think you DESERVE it...
Some will use you, believing that they are HELPING you...

... and some will use you because they NEED to, in order to survive...
... and they will use you because they feel the shame of their predicament.

... but each one is different...

... each one wears a different mask...

... each one is controlled by the mask they wear...

... each one is different...

As each devil is different...
... and each devil has different motives...

I assure you,
The details are in the devil.

Make Your Mark!

Make Your Mark - A Hidahl 2015

Make your mark!
Speak your mind!
Live the life you want
Without apologies to your oppressors!

The bastards will ALWAYS try to keep you down
So sometimes,
Your mark has to be a BITE!

There will always be assholes...
There will always be idiots...
There will always be elitist douchebags...
There will always be people stupid enough to believe in the delusion of superiority...

... and that's why you have to MAKE YOUR MARK!

You have to PUT THEM in their place
Because they're too stupid and/or arrogant
To find it on their own!

The bigots won't stop...
Neither will the elitists...
Nor the greedy...

ASKING them won't make them stop...
TELLING them won't make them stop...
And they're not elected,
So they can't be voted out...

... and that's why you have to MAKE YOUR MARK!

Stand STRONG!
Talk HARD!
Chest up and ADVANCE!
Meet their arrogance with POWER!

They want to make you into VICTIMS!
They want to make you SLAVES!
They want to STEAL your life!
They want to leave you with NOTHING!

They seek to OPPRESS!
They seek to DESTROY!
They seek to UNDERMINE!
And they don't care if you DIE!

... and that's why you have to MAKE YOUR MARK!

13 Questions

13 Questions

I thought it might be about time to play a little "Getting to Know You".  As an artist, I thought it would be a good idea to ask these 13 questions, using 13 unique ornate question marks, including the master image above.

So, here it is... 13 questions, accompanied by 13 original, hand-made question marks.

Question 1

Who/what are your biggest creative influences?

Answer
I take inspiration from several places.  Life experiences, awesome views, the beautiful State of Colorado, and the AWESOME city of Denver, to start... but there's always influence that comes from other artists I like.  For example, Monet, Van Gogh, Salvador Dali, Andy Warhol, Banksy... music plays a role, too... and then, of course, there's always pot; which is always a blast of creative energy...

Question 2
Some of your writing and art incorporates themes that might be considered... um... perhaps a little angry, or maybe controversial... where does this come from?

Answer
I think most people carry certain elements of their adolescent years with them for the rest of their lives, whether they realize it or not.  In my case, this is the music I listened to in High School; which included a lot of punk and other things with "anti-establishment" messaging.  I listened to (and still listen to) a lot of bands like Dead Kennedys, NOFX, Black Flag, Propagandhi, Ministry... and then, of course, in the 90's, we had popular stuff like Rage Against the Machine, Rollins Band, and stuff like that...

It all kind of congealed into this person here; still fairly "extreme"... still hate the rich... still hate monopolies and "Corporate America" in general... and, of course, the "religious Right"... I see a lot of these things as genuine threats to society and civilization as a whole.  Often, great art is done in protest of social norms and the "status quo".  However, I don't want this kind of negativity and vitriol, as ever-present as it is in my own mind, to overshadow my greater message.

 Question 3
On that note, what IS your greater message?

Answer
My greater message is somewhat simple.  I want people to focus more on the simple beauty in the world; like sunsets, and hiking, and great music and food... but also, to find the beauty in their more painful emotions, like anger, and sadness, and hate, and things like that...

The good stuff in life wouldn't be as good, if the shitty parts of life weren't there.  You need the pain to make the pleasure ACTUALLY pleasurable.  You have to have that counter-balance; and in that regard, it's a beautiful thing; despite how painful it is to go through it.

Question 4
Expanding on your answer there, what painful experiences have contributed to your happiness now?

Answer
That's a tough question... starting in First Grade, life was really hard for me.  My First Grade teacher was very abusive.  She used to beat me up in front of the class; and she ONLY picked on me... nobody else.  After that, I was bullied the entire rest of the way through school... Middle School was the worst... I'd get jumped at least once a week... the teachers would WATCH, and wouldn't do anything.  But when I fought back, for some reason, they suspended ME for doing so.

Other painful experiences include a very abusive marriage, in which I was treated like a slave (literally) for 6 1/2 years... there were shitty bosses that have added to the equation, too...

Of course, the untimely death of my younger brother in 2007 has been hard to deal with, as well.

Question 5
How has your brother been an influence in your life?

Answer
My brother was one of the smartest, most creative people I've ever been privileged to know.  My brother was instrumental in a lot of ways.  He got me to be more open-minded about the music I listen to.  His art was AMAZING... kind of similar to Rob Zombie's style, originally, and evolved from there.

He lost a bet, and wound up with a miniscule tattoo of a question mark; a symbol that he had kind of kicked around as a personal logo.  That was the only tattoo he had.  I've always liked tattoos, and a few years after he died, I got a question mark of my own tattooed on my right shoulder.  Now, I feel like he's always with me, in a way... it helps.

My brother was also one of the best guitarists I've ever known.  To be honest, I haven't picked up my guitar much lately, without him to jam with.  He pushed me to be a better guitarist.  Lately, I guess I've substituted singing for guitar.

Question 6
Let's lighten the mood a little bit, and change directions... we don't want to depress people, here... what music do you listen to while you work?

Answer
My playlist is somewhat diverse... it IS kind of heavy on the punk/ska side, but some of the bands that get the most play are Black Flag, Eels, Streetlight Manifesto, Richard Cheese... also lots of local music, like MF Ruckus, The Windermeres, -ITIS, Black Dots, Flobots, City Mouse, Warlock Pinchers, and a few others... Denver's always had an AWESOME music scene!

Question 7
Does your music affect your art? If so, how?

Answer
Really, it depends on what I'm working on... for most things, I just run a massive playlist called "Shit I Like" and throw the thing on 'random'... the biggest difference comes if I'm feeling angry, or working on a piece that's aggressive or angry... if I'm doing something like that, I throw on Slayer, or Mushroomhead, or something heavier, like that... but for the most part, it's just the playlist.

Question 8
Why do you make art?

Answer
Wow, a somewhat basic one... there are lots of reasons; but mainly, it's an escape and an output from the more painful things in my life, and in my past.  I have somewhat severe PTSD, and my art gives me a way to focus on the things I love, while channeling my pain into my more aggressive or angry pieces.  At the risk of making this a 'political' thing, I would also like to advocate the use of marijuana in treatment of PTSD.  That's something that I don't think a lot of people understand about pot, and about me, and my relationship to pot.  It helps.  A lot.  Without pot, there are days I don't want to leave the house.

Question 9
What are your favorite things to make?

Answer
I really enjoy making the things that have a Colorado theme, or a Colorado flag theme... they make me look forward to my Spring and Summer hiking escapes, and snowboarding in the winter... I like making those, but I don't necessarily want to be KNOWN for those; I want to be known, more, for making things that people want to put on their walls, and things that make people think.  I also want to make things that highlight the life of someone that doesn't fit into any kind of societal 'box'.

Question 10
Could you expand on that, please?

Answer
I've never really been the kind of person who completely "fits in" with any certain group.  There are a lot of different sides to me, and I 'get along' with a lot of people, and I can relate to a lot of people, but I've never been able to say, definitively, "I'm a punk," or "I'm a goth," or "I'm a hippy," or "I'm a (fill in the blank)"... I think, in a way, I've always been looking for the right group of people or sub-culture to 'fit in' with... but my tastes are so diverse, and my thought process is so different from everybody else's, I think, that there's always that 'one thing' that sets me aside as 'not an official part' of any group... something different in every 'scene', and for different reasons, and it usually boils down to something like, "If you like (fill in the blank), or if you don't like (fill in the blank), then you're not really 'one of us'." That 'absolutist' line of thinking irritates the shit out of me.

Question 11
Let's go back to the 'pot' thing... aside from art, what do you like to do stoned?

Answer
My favorite thing is to watch horror movies... I've always had an affinity for horror, and it's always scarier when you're stoned.  I also like hiking, and museums, and live music... of course, eating a gourmet hamburger, with a fried egg, and maybe some green chili... a GOOD burger... eating is always great when you're stoned!

Question 12
Where can I buy prints of your work?

Answer
I do not yet have a web store, but if there's something you want to buy, shoot me an email and I'll price it out for you... I'll get you what you want.

Question 13
In the master piece, with all the question marks, where is the 13th question mark?

 Answer
I sign every piece with a hidden question mark.  In part, this is homage to my brother; but also, I don't want people to like my art because they like my art... not because I'm the person who made it.  A lot of people... art snobs, mostly... look at the signature before they look at the painting... they'll love or hate the work purely based on who made it, rather than whether they ACTUALLY like it.  With hiding my signature, I'm able to sign my piece in a way that works with the aesthetics of the piece, without distracting the part of the audience that's more concerned about who made it than what it is.

To answer your question, the thirteenth question mark is my hidden signature.  If you look for it, you might find it.

Closing

Thank you for taking time to get to know your artist!  I hope that you learned some things about me as an artist, and that you are intrigued to continue enjoying my work!

Have a great day, all!

The Paradox of Hate

Hate is an evil, a necessary evil, and a paradox.

When I say the word, 'hate', what's the first thing that comes to mind?

Is it the KKK?

Is it Rick Santorum?

Hitler?

Or do you think of people and things that you hate?

People of certain Races?

People of certain Religions?

People of certain ideologies?

Or, maybe it makes you think of certain words or images...

"Zeig Heil!"?

Faggot?

Watermellons?

Maybe I spend too much time on social media, where everyone's voice is amplified tenfold by the broad reach of certain outlets...

I follow the news fairly closely, from a fairly wide variety of outlets.  Several of my sources attract people from all across the political and social spectrum; major (trustworthy) news organizations and fact-checking sites.

Due to the broad reach of these outlets, comments abound in the threads accompanying the articles; mainly of people arguing their positions on the stories.

I see a lot of hate... I mean, BLATANT racism, homophobia, antisemitism, Islamophobia, and every other branch of hatred you can imagine, in the commentary provided by the patrons of these outlets.

But the thing is, the hate I see sparks a hate of my own... a hatred of hate... and with the racially-charged nature of so many of today's events, I get to a breaking point, and start spewing my own very, very nasty hate... yes, I've been guilty of it, too... I've said some DOWNRIGHT EVIL things in exasperation of the way the world is rigged, and with the way that some people act like cavemen.  Like many, I perceive great problems with society.  Like not-so many, I view members of the KKK as unevolved STAINS on the cultural landscape, and as proof of evolution; but not necessarily proof of 'natural selection', because there are SO DAMN MANY of them!

As someone who finds racism, homophobia, and misogyny to be abhorrent, I often fall into the trap of reflecting the hate and the vitriol right back in similar fashion, with equally inflammatory language.  Fueled by utter disgust for anti-intellectual troglodytes, I do what I consider to be "giving them a taste of their own medicine..."

... and therein lies both the necessary evil and the paradox...

Let's be honest, here... the biggest and most important social movements, both great and terrible, have been fueled by hate of one kind or another...

The French Countrymen hated the Aristocracy...

The Jews hated being slaves in Egypt...

The African-Americans hated Jim Crow...

... and on the contrary...

The white Southerners hate(d) the African-Americans...

The Puritans hated Witches...

Hitler hated EVERYBODY...

The paradox being, hate is every bit as necessary as it is hurtful.

A Good Laugh!

**This post will be updated as new stuff is made**

A good laugh is one of the things that always makes one's day better and brighter, on ANY given day!  It is in that vein that I decided to start this string.

With that in mind, I realize that not everyone has the same idea as to what is funny, what is insulting, what is absurd, and what is considered to be 'tasteful'.  Some of this material may be insulting, or 'tasteless', or 'lame'... but who really cares?  Some people LIKE 'lame' things!  Some people LIKE 'tasteless' things!  Some people LIKE 'absurd' things!  Some people LIKE insulting things!  As mentioned in my last post, being a big fan of satire, I am no stranger to the utilization of 'objectionable material' as a means to get a laugh, as long as it makes a valid point (as seen, for example, in the BRILLIANT satire, "The Onion Movie").

One thing, however, that you will NOT see in my work are things that are RACIST, MISOGYNISTIC, HOMO/TRANSPHOBIC, ISLAMOPHOBIC, OR ANTI-SEMITIC!  Racism and the other aforementioned perversions are a plague on humanity, and I refuse to stoop to such a pathetic low as to endorse these topics.  Racists and homophobes are abominations against society.

With that in mind, please enjoy this gallery!

The Gods we Make

Consider the early days of television: "The Honeymooners", "Leave it to Beaver", "I Love Lucy", "Father Knows Best", "The Andy Griffith Show", "The Brady Bunch"...

AVERAGE people... people that the viewing audience could identify with.  People looked up to the characters on tv because they were easy to relate to.

... and then something happened...

Over the last 25 or so years, we have seen a shift in the things we decide to celebrate as being the greatest traits to uphold and seek to obtain.  Those with the MOST money and the LEAST intelligence are often the ones who get the most attention, creating Gods out of cretins and narcissists.

Kim Kardashian... Paris Hilton... the cast of "Jersey Shore"... Tila Tequila... the "Duck Dynasty" family... Bam Margera... "The Real Housewives of __________"... Sarah Palin...

Initially, this started with the advent of the show, "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous." (For you youngsters out there, it's the old-old-old-school version of "Cribs") This show was started during a different time in America... a time when hard work really COULD make you rich... a time when a fair wage was earned across the scale, and a pension was almost guaranteed.

People enjoyed seeing how the wealthiest movie stars lived, because that's who people aspired to be.  Over time, though, other shows were created in the same vein; that let average people into the lives of the richest people.  "Dallas" was the next big one, and throughout the 80's, more shows popped up to idolize the wealthy... "Silver Spoons," "Richie Rich," "Diff'rent Strokes," "The Jeffersons"...

Then, one day, MTV came up with "The Real World" and "Road Rules," which were initially shows that were intended to open people's minds with regards to race relations and gender equality (a pursuit that EPICALLY succeeded); but had the unforeseen consequence of causing "Music" TV to abandon "Music" in favor of shallow highlights from Spring Break in Cancun.

Compounded by a strike by TV writers, many other channels started to show more "reality" TV shows that did not require writers.  It started with shows like "Survivor" and "American Idol", but when Fox hit paydirt with the insultingly titled "The Simple Life", featuring Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie, the worship of wealthy morons kicked into high gear.  "The Simple Life" was followed by an onslaught of shows about lazy rich people with inherited money and loose morals, across almost every network and cable station.

Last year, Kim Kardashian took a series of pictures that went viral.  There was one in particular, that I found to be so shamelessly exploitative that I had to use it to make a statement about the Gods we make of the people with the worst traits to exhibit.

In the original picture, Kim Kardashian was holding a gushing champagne bottle in a very phallic manner, with a stream coming from the champagne bottle shooting over her head, filling a champagne glass that was perched on her prominently displayed ass; with a facial expression that more than vaguely resembles a blow-up sex doll.

In my alterations, I thought it seemed appropriate to compare her artificially-inflated fame to the amplitude that it has become.  Shameless wealthy people have been elevated to the level of Gods by a media environment that worships shamelessness and excess.

I decided to replace Kim's head with a portion of Kevin Smith's brilliantly satirical presentation of Jesus Christ for a few reasons.  First, this depiction of Jesus has a viral tradition, as well; calling to the similar tradition that allowed both images to spread on the internet.

Secondly, this depiction of Jesus, dubbed "Buddy Christ" or "Buddy Jesus", coming from Kevin Smith's film, "Dogma," which is largely a satirical take on Catholicism.  I thought the common link of satire was very important to something like this.

In the film, "Buddy Christ" is introduced to the world by a Cardinal, portrayed by the great George Carlin, whom I idolize, myself.  I see "Buddy Christ" as every bit as much an homage to George Carlin as I do to Kevin Smith and to Jesus Christ.

This depiction of Jesus, in the film, was created to appeal to a wider audience than the typical presentation of Jesus on a Crucifix; because the Catholic Church thought that a more positive, friendly, "less-suffering-ish," "more love-thy-neighbor-ish" depiction of Jesus would bring more people in.  The church officially sanctioned "Buddy Christ" as a "rebirth" of sorts.

Significant of changing directions, I thought this Christ was appropriate, also, to demonstrate the "skewed" direction our own entertainment has taken over the last few decades; departing from its initial connection to the viewing audience to appeal to the widest masses.

Also, I thought his wink added charm...

To complete the satirical slant, I replaced the champagne bottle with a water bottle, the champagne glass to a wine glass, and turned the champagne into red wine, as it comes down to fill the glass.

As a whole, I like this satirical slant on the current media obsession with the worship of shallow, moronic elitists.
